IBM conducted 1,500 semi-structured interviews with CEOs of 33 different industries from 60 nations. The results of the report suggest that over 60% of the CEOs believed that creativity is the most important leadership quality in the 21st century. The report further concluded that creativity superseded other critical factors such as leaders’ integrity, global thinking, dedication, and even fairness in the eyes of the CEOs.

Question No. 1: Considering COVID-19 pandemic situation and its widespread repercussion on almost all industries and social life, do you believe that creativity would remain the most important leadership quality in the 21st century. Why? Justify your plausible arguments with the help of appropriate examples from any two industries/sectors operating in Pakistan.

Answer (1): Yes! I believe that creativity will stay remain the topmost choice of all the CEO even after the COVID-19, not just the topmost choice but it would be more demanding by all other CEO as well because after surviving with the COVID-19 crisis, firms have to recover all the losses and opportunities that they have lost in the Economic Crisis.

That is why they have to come up with more powerful and creative strategies by their leaders, they would require more innovation and creative idea to regain their position in the market. So this is why they would require more creativity in their organization, leaders that can think out of the box and come up with strategies that just not make them recover from the crisis but also help them gain more market share because every other firm will be recovering too, so the one who recovers first will be on the top seat.

Education Industry: During this pandemics, many Education sectors just closed down their sectors and promote the students in the next class or semester, they didn’t try to tackle the situation, they’re just waiting for the end of this pandemics and after that, they can resume their classes again, but on the other hand education with creative leaders came up with the solution in this situation, like IQRA University who organized online classes rather than just promoting the students to next semester without completing their courses, which would be the big loss for all the students.

FMCG Industry: Most of the FMCG sectors like Dalda and Naurus, shut down most of their operational departments during the pandemics, only the production plant was in fully operating condition and 2-3 employee were allowed daily in each department to work.

This created a shortage of their product in the market because of having lack of efficiency in the department as there were many employees missing, but on the other hand FMCG sectors like Nestle, Unilever made a creative movement and make a virtual workplace for their employee by which none of the employees have to come to the office instead everyone has to perform their task online on the virtual workplace.

Question No. 2: How would you apply divergent and/or convergent thinking in generating novel and useful contingency ideas to ensure the survival of a business organization during the COVID-19 pandemic situation?

Answer (b): COVID-19 has effected almost every organization in the world, every company is looking for the solution that they can apply to resolve the working issues that has arisen by this pandemic. Some are using the straight forward solution that most of the companies are using like terminating their workers, deducting half of their salaries etc.

This is what Convergent Thinking is, these companies are not applying any sort of brainstorming sessions or applying any creativity in their organization, they are just following with a general idea that everyone else is using in this moment of crisis.

The innovative and creative companies would apply the Divergent Thinking pattern only to come up with a solution in this crisis, instead of pitching all the burden of this crisis on the employee, they would rather think something new and creative that others haven’t done yet in the market, by which no one suffers in this situation neither company has to bear the loss.

Example: Unilever Pakistan has developed a whole virtual workplace with a huge investment, when these crises started to appear in Pakistan in the month of March, in that virtual workplace every employee had their own room and each department has their own area, the employee has to work from home and even all the meetings were held on that virtual workplace. The timing of the office was the same as the regular timing and also provided the monthly internet packages for free to all employees in case of any electrical problem they face. This is a pure example of how to deal with problems through divergent thinking.
