The term Diversity reflects the idea that all individuals vary to each other. Everyone has their own characteristics like there thinking process, mindset, perception, belief, cultures, personality, etc. Which differentiate them from others, the same appears in an organization when the people from different values, perceptions, personality interacts with each other it bring the diversity in an organization. Organizational diversity in the workplace refers to the total makeup of the employee workforce and the amount of diversity included. Diversity refers to differences in various defining personal traits such as age, gender, race, marital status, ethnic origin, religion, education, and many other secondary qualities.

Other than that common differences like age, gender, and health also differentiate each individual, from an organization point of view, these differences affect so much because the decisions that the organization or manager takes might be satisfactory for an employee but on the same time, it might be unsatisfactory for the other employee because of the diversified characteristics. This is why it is essential for managers to understand how different decisions may affect the employee’s characteristics.

Now the first thing that comes in our mind is that why do managers even have to take care about the diversity while taking the decision, what effects would it make to not considering diversity as a whole. Well, the answer is quite simple. Managers are bound to understand the characteristics of employees, assume a qualified employee loading the trucks with material on the other end an unqualified employee preparing the financial statements of the organization.

These are the physical and intellectual abilities an employee has. Most probably, it is believing that physically strong people are more likely to place on hard-working jobs whereas. Individuals who have strong intellectual skills are more likely to place on decision-making and critical thinking. We had better understand now the importance of diversity. It helps us to place the right person in the right job.

The productivity of an organization is solely depending on the diversity of employees. Assume a group of employees having the same mindset, perceptions, and thinking process are working on a marketing plan. How would they come up with ideas that are more creative when all of them will be having the same sought of suggestions? Here we can understand the importance of having diversity in groups within an organization.

It helps the group to make the criticism that might arise about the idea that other suggestions so that the final idea would be a Bullet Proof and also more creative and attractive ideas can be discovered when opinions from different backgrounds, mindsets, and ages (Experience plus Fresh) minds get together in a single group. This also brings innovation when different ideas collaborate with each other and help the organization to grow more rapidly.

An organization can utilize so many other benefits by diversification in the workplace but benefits have their cost too. Managing the diversity within an organization is a major challenge for a manager as if more conflicts usually arise when different personalities work together. The most known challenge is discrimination.

Supporting ideas of one-group might make the other groups feel like they are being discriminated by a manager because of any fact like religion, age, gender, rather than looking on there outputs employee starts comparing their self with other groups thus decrease the self-esteem of the employee. Discriminating any group based on any diverse characteristics can create dissatisfaction and affects the overall performance of the organization. In order to grow the organization manager has to look forward to all the issues that employees face because of the diversification so that employees can serve their full potential in the workplace and make the organization full their strategic goals.
