How Male and Female Managers Influence Their Own Bosses

It is quite different in the influencing styles of male and female, Lauterbach & Weiner, (1996) found that female manager depicts more of the concern toward others in influencing their bosses while male managers depict more concern about their own self when it comes to influencing their bosses, meaning that female manager has much more affection for their sub-ordinates than male managers and that is why female managers try to influence their bosses in the best interest of their sub-ordinates. Some other findings that they extracted are as follow:

  • Persistence: It was found that male managers tend to compromise their influence when the boss doesn’t express much interest in the talk and they mostly start to negotiate their ideas to at least get something out of it, while on the other hand, female managers are more persistent to toward their influence attempt, they make every sort of techniques to persuade their boss, even if they have to oppose their bosses, they will do that too. As discussed above female managers are more concerned about, what makes them stand for them, and that what builds their confidence because they know they’re doing the right thing.

  • Emotions and Dedication: Female managers find to be more emotional than male managers, this makes them more supportive at the workplace, whereas male managers are mostly found to be task-oriented, they support their sub-ordinates but to a given extend, if an employee wouldn’t work the way need to do than male manager might take some serious steps towards him, this shows their dedication toward the goals of a firm which makes them less lenient at the workplace while female managers give more freedom to their sub-ordinates which sometimes bring poor results for the organization. This is why bosses are ore influence toward the male managers in terms of dedication.
  • Influence by Performance: Both males and female don’t have much of the difference in terms of performances and effectiveness level, all the influential tactics they apply on their bosses completely depend on the situation for what they seeking to influence their boss for, that is why if the influence attempt would be for the betterment and advancement of the organization then it won’t be hard for the manager to influence their boss otherwise the influence attempt wouldn’t stay for long, that is why managers seek to find different opportunities that can help the organization grow so that they can better influence their boss while seeking for the organizational growth.
