Originally called the Office of the Future (OOF), the renamed Pfizer Works allows employees to shift tedious and time-consuming tasks with the click of a single button on their computer desktop. They describe what they need on an online form, which is then sent to one of two Indian service outsourcing firms.

When a request is received, a team member in India calls the Pfizer employee to clarify what’s needed and by when. The team member then e-mails back a cost specification for the requested work. If the Pfizer employee decides to proceed, the costs involved are charged to the employee’s department. About this unique arrangement, Cain said that he relishes working with what he prefers to call his “personal consulting organization.”

What about Joe Cain’s experiences? Answer No. 1: Pfizer is one of the largest pharmaceutical firms in the whole world and not in just the pharma industry and in the whole global industry, that is why there’s no doubt that how competent and creative their employees are which is the key asset of any company, so what makes their employee so competent?

The answer is that Pfizer is letting their employees perform and focus on just the key activities of their jobs, like making strategies, attempting new researches, making a new creative business plan, data analysis, making different KPI predict their performances, etc. and all the other irrelevant activities that employee need to perform like making a presentation, writing reports, recording data on sheets, etc.

All these supporting types of activities are no longer part of their employee job description, instead, Pfizer handed out all these kind of extra time-consuming activities to some Indian outsourcing firm, who charge a nominal fee to prepare all these stuff on the basis of given instruction and criteria, they named this approach as (OOF) Office of the Furniture. This enables Pfizer to spend more time on the key activities and use the extra saved time on building new more competent strategies to increase the market share of the organization.

  • Job Specialization/ Division of Work: The most concrete impact that this initiative had, is on the job specialization, now the workers have to perform the job in which they are specialized in and all other tasks will be hand over to the outsourcing firm, this also reduces the workload on the employee by which they can work with a more calm and fresh mind. The main outcome of this initiative would be that the efficiency of their employee would increase tremendously thus the overall performance of the firm will be more productive.
  • Formalization: This initiative world makes the organizational structure to low formalization because every employee has to deliver their extra work to the outsourcing workers thus they have to deal and guide them according to their understanding and what they want to be done, if there would be high formalization then top management has to provide all the information that they want to be done by an external worker which will increase their workload and wastage of time, so the low level of formalization is the best way to go.
  • Responsibility: In the new organizational structure of Pfizer the Authority, Responsibility, and Delegation of each employee is also being decide and the authority of level is higher than the lowest level workers and also responsibility is also high for the upper level and low for the lower level.

It is quite feasible for the other companies to adopt this approach in any their business context, but one thing that is important is that company has to be huge, this approach wouldn’t be effective for the small organization, like the companies who are working only domestically not internationally.

These companies often don’t have many costs to hire any outsourcing firms that could handle their extra and irrelevant activities of the day and also these companies are not really looking to grow in the international market, they just want to capture the domestic audience, so having a small percentage target customer doesn’t require much of the innovation or creative strategies which gives them much time to spend on these type irrelevant job activities.

Companies that works Internationally have more capital to invest on these outsourcing activities, these firm looking to grow every day and want to compete to not just domestically, but internationally as well which require more innovations in the product, more research and analysis, have to conduct more research activities and critical thinking in order to compete worldwide.

When a manager will do all irrelevant job activities he/she can’t concentrate on knowledge work like strategy, innovation, networking, collaborating, and critical thinking. For this reason, an outsourcing company that can do their required works by a specific amount of time and instruction by be very beneficial for the company. I think it’s a very innovative solution by which a company can get much more financial benefits as it saving time to analyze the data and employees are able to concentrate on their knowledge work.

Other Organizations it might Work for: As discussed above it can be suitable for any company who is operating worldwide, which requires more time for strategy building, need more innovation in the product and require more efficiency and effectiveness in the work of their employee, companies like Unilever, PNG, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceutical, Abbott, Nestle, etc. could also get the benefit from this approach as they are operating in almost every part of the world.

This makes them require a high level of competency to tackle their competitors both local and global, having to invest much of the time on these irrelevant job activities won’t let them do this effectively that is why they should apply this approach in order to be more effective.
